Cavour
Cavour
Cavour is situated between Turin and Cuneo. It was settled in prehistorical times and in the first century B.C. became a Roman Municipium. In the fifth century A.D., Cavour was pillaged by the Longobards and, five centuries later, by the Saracens too. In the 11th century, the Benedictines built the Abbey of St. Maria and contributed to the development of the area.
Eventually, Cavour was annexed to the estates of Turin's Bishops, of the Piossasco, Acaja, Racconigi and Benso families. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was devastated by the French but managed to preserve its monuments: the Rocca, the Abbey of St. Maria and the mansions of several illustrious citizens, including Giovanni Giolitti and Camillo Benso. Nowadays, Cavour is celebrated for its apples, to which it dedicates a festival in November.
