Alba
Alba
Inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Age, in the 2nd century A.D. Alba was occupied by the Romans and renamed Alba Pompeia. In the Middle Ages, it rivalled with Asti for control of the Tanaro valley. It belonged to the Marquis of Monferrato, the Gonzagas and the Savoys. Alba's heritage includes Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassic monuments, churches and paintings. During WW2, it had a key role in the Resistance, as recorded in Beppe Fenoglio's novels. |
